What Changed on Manalapan's Route 9 While the Orchard Lost Its Apples

The usual fall plan around Manalapan is in trouble this year. Battleview Orchards says the April freeze wiped out its sour cherry, peach, nectarine and apple crops for 2026, so there won't be any apple picking this October. In the same months, Route 9 South gained a coffee drive-thru, a handmade ice cream shop, a kids' cafe and party venue, and a promised roast beef counter. All four sit between 345 and 360 on the street numbers. A 14-slide indoor park opened a short drive away on Woodward Road.

So the fresh additions to the Manalapan calendar this fall are mostly indoors, close together, and open after dark. Some of the old fall routine is still around. Here is what's new on Route 9 and what's still running at the farms.

The orchard had one crop left

Battleview's pick-your-own page reads like a list of crops it lost. Every summer and fall fruit, from early peaches to Fuji apples, is marked as a 2026 crop loss due to the April freeze. Pumpkins survived. The farm calls this year's pumpkins a "Bountiful Crop," with picking from about September 19 through October and hayrides starting September 19.

Battleview has a Freehold address and posted those dates in June. The farm itself asks visitors to call ahead to confirm dates, hours and supply, and it takes only cash at the picking locations. With a pumpkin patch and no apple rows, a trip there is shorter than usual this year. That leaves more of a Saturday free for somewhere else.

Four addresses, three plazas and one freestanding building

All the new openings on Route 9 South sit within 15 street numbers of each other. Here they are in address order, with the latest information available as of early October:

  1. 345 Route 9 South, Suite 9, Design Center Plaza. Aunt Carrots Ice Cream holds its grand opening celebration on Friday, Oct. 9, from noon to 10 p.m., with specials, contests and giveaways. The owner, Kara, who goes by "Aunt Carrots," makes the ice cream in the store and will be there to meet guests that day.
  2. 349 Route 9 South, Ashley Plaza. On A Roll is a Staten Island restaurant known for hot roast beef on fresh-baked rolls. In early August, Patch reported that it had announced its first New Jersey location on Route 9 South in Manalapan, but no opening date had been set. WPST later listed it as "coming soon" at 349. The restaurant's own website still lists only its Staten Island location, so treat this one as announced but not yet open.
  3. 357 Route 9 South, Town Pointe Shopping Center. Fun On Us Cafe & Party Place announced a free grand opening for Saturday, Aug. 1, as its first New Jersey venue. NJ.com's preview described regular cafe hours after the event. The company's FAQ now lists the Manalapan venue. Its Manalapan party page still says "Coming Spring 2026," though, and online booking isn't turned on there yet. Call before planning a birthday around it.
  4. 360 Route 9, a freestanding building. Gregory's Coffee has been serving customers here since late June. It is the chain's first Monmouth County location and its first double-lane drive-thru. The formal celebration came later. A company release set out a two-day grand opening on September 16 and 17, with the founder taking over the drive-thru and a ribbon-cutting on the 17th.

These four aren't one development. They're three separate plazas and a standalone building, and each opening was announced on its own. Taken together, they make the 345 to 360 block a place to get coffee in the morning, cater a kid's party in the afternoon and get a scoop of ice cream at night.

The biggest opening was a few minutes away, indoors

Slick City Action Park at 150 Woodward Road held its grand opening on Tuesday, September 29. Mayor Jack McNaboe and members of the Township Committee cut the ribbon. Public hours that first evening ran from 6 to 9 p.m., admission was half off, and the event raised money for The Foundation for Manalapan-Englishtown Regional Schools.

It's the first Slick City in New Jersey, and it's owned by Andrew and Stacy Katz, who are longtime New Jersey residents. There are 14 dry slides, including Big Wave, Hyper Loop, Corkscrew and the dual-lane Turbo Twin. The park also has a sport court, a dodgeball court, a ziprail, a soft play area and a net course. Younger kids get their own slide, called Littles Rush.

"It's an attraction that gets kids and adults off their phones, interacting together and making memories in a way you simply can't find anywhere else," Andrew Katz told Patch.

Rain doesn't matter at Slick City, and it doesn't care whether there was a frost in April. It's a dependable choice for a wet Sunday in late October, after the outdoor festival weekends are over.

Where the outdoor fall season still holds

The farm side of Manalapan's fall is still running. It just leans on pumpkins, corn mazes and shows this year, since fruit picking is off. Maple Leaf Farms sits at 525 Route 9 South, further down the same road as the new openings. Its Fall Fun Fest runs every Saturday and Sunday through October 31, plus Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 12. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., last entry is 4 p.m., and tickets are sold only at the gate. The farm lists pumpkin picking, a corn maze, a bull riding show, pig races, live country music and more than 30 family activities.

Happy Day Farm's Fall Festival runs on select dates through November 8, so it outlasts the October-only events. Its schedule includes November 1, 7 and 8. The ticket page puts it in Manalapan but doesn't give a street address, so check the address before you go.

The rest of October, by date

The new businesses and the farm weekends fit around a short list of township and park events:

  • Through Sun., Oct. 4: A Taste of Manalapan Restaurant Week ends. The township announcement gives the September 27 to October 4 dates but doesn't list participating restaurants.
  • Sun., Oct. 4: First-Sunday guided walking tour at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, 20 State Route 33. It depends on the weather.
  • Fri., Oct. 9: Aunt Carrots grand opening, noon to 10 p.m., at 345 Route 9 South.
  • Sun., Oct. 11: Dr. David Martin speaks on "Nurses, Warriors, and Camp Followers: Women in the Revolution" at the battlefield.
  • Mon., Oct. 12: Extra Columbus Day opening of the Maple Leaf Farms Fall Fun Fest.
  • Sat., Oct. 17: Lantern and candlelight evening at the battlefield. It also depends on the weather.
  • Fri., Oct. 23: Monster Mania and Trunk or Treat, 4 to 8 p.m., at the Manalapan Recreation Center, 93 Freehold Road. Admission is free, and there's a haunted trail, a pumpkin patch and a bounce house. The rain date is Oct. 24.
  • Sat., Oct. 24: Township shredding event for Manalapan residents, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until the truck is full, at the Franklin Lane Commuter Lot. Bring ID, since it will be checked.
  • Sat., Oct. 31: Last day of Maple Leaf Farms' Fall Fun Fest.

One township event is still unsettled. The Fall MAC Kids Concert set for September 27 is marked "POSTPONED" on the township calendar, and no new date is listed yet.

How a fall weekend fits together now

Put it all on a map and a weekend mostly runs along one road. You can get coffee at the Gregory's drive-thru at 360, spend the day at Maple Leaf Farms down at 525, and drop by Battleview for a pumpkin if you've confirmed supply and have cash. Slick City covers the rainy days. Starting October 9, Aunt Carrots at 345 is open for the evening stop. Once On A Roll sets a date at 349, it will join them. The orchard will grow fruit again in a future season. This year, the new additions to Manalapan's fall are the Route 9 storefronts.

Whenever a new business opens on Route 9, I also get asked what it means for nearby homes.
